Why Isn't My Business Showing Up in ChatGPT Answers?

Absence from an AI answer is almost never a ranking problem: it means the model cannot find you, cannot confirm you, or cannot read your site.

Why doesn't ChatGPT mention my business?

Your business does not show up in ChatGPT because the model cannot verify it exists in the way the question is being asked. AI answers are built from sources that can be retrieved and cross-checked at the moment of the question, so a business with one thin website, inconsistent details across the web, and no independent source confirming its category or service area simply has nothing for the model to stand on. It is not that you ranked fourth. It is that you were never a candidate.

This is a different problem from losing to a competitor. If a rival gets named and you do not, you are in a comparison and losing it. If nobody in your market gets named, the question itself is too vague. If your competitors get named and you are nowhere, the model does not have enough evidence to include you at all, and that is the situation this page is about.

The good news is that absence has a short list of causes, and they are diagnosable in an hour. Work through them in the order below, because the first two make everything after them count for more.

  • Your business details are inconsistent, so the model cannot resolve you as one entity
  • Your website blocks AI crawlers, so there is nothing to retrieve
  • Your site is a single page or renders only in JavaScript, so there is nothing to read
  • No independent source confirms your category and service area
  • Your pages list services instead of answering the questions people actually ask
  • You are indexed by Google and almost nowhere else

Is my website even visible to AI crawlers?

Check this first, because it is binary and it is common. AI companies use named crawlers, and plenty of sites block them without the owner ever knowing. OpenAI operates GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, and ChatGPT-User for different purposes, and a security plugin, a Cloudflare setting, or a well-meaning developer may have disallowed them in your robots.txt.

Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt in a browser and read it. If you see a Disallow rule aimed at GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, or Google-Extended, that is your answer and nothing else you do will matter until it is removed. Publishers block these bots deliberately to protect content they sell. A local service business almost never wants that.

The second visibility check is whether your content exists in the raw HTML. Turn off JavaScript in your browser and load your homepage. If the page goes blank or loses its text, a crawler may be seeing the same emptiness. Sites built as single-page applications without server rendering are frequently invisible in exactly this way.

  • Read yourdomain.com/robots.txt and look for Disallow rules on AI user agents
  • Load your site with JavaScript disabled and confirm the text is still there
  • Check that your key pages return a 200 status and are not blocked by a login or a firewall rule
  • Confirm you have a sitemap.xml that actually lists your current pages

Does my Google Business Profile affect whether ChatGPT finds me?

Yes, indirectly and significantly. ChatGPT does not read Google Maps the way Google does, but the details you publish in your Google Business Profile propagate across the web into aggregators, directories, and the local pages that AI models retrieve. A neglected or unverified profile leaves a trail of stale, contradictory information everywhere downstream.

The parts that matter most are the ones that make you identifiable rather than the ones that make you look good. Your exact business name with no keyword stuffing, one correct primary category, real service areas, hours, and services listed individually. If you have duplicate or unclaimed listings from an old address or a previous owner, those are actively working against you, because they give the model two versions of you and no reason to trust either.

It is also worth claiming Bing Places. ChatGPT's live search does not depend solely on Google's index, and Bing Places is free and takes about ten minutes. Being present in more than one index is one of the cheapest ways to become findable.

Why does ChatGPT cite Reddit and directories instead of my website?

Because those pages answer the question and your website describes your services. A Reddit thread titled who is a good electrician in this town contains exactly the language and structure a model needs. Your services page contains a list of things you do. Only one of those can be quoted as an answer.

Reddit in particular is heavily indexed, carries first-person recommendation language, and OpenAI has a content licensing agreement with Reddit, so it appears in citations far more often than its size would suggest. Directories get cited for a similar reason: they present structured, comparable information about many businesses at once, which is what a model wants when the question is a comparison.

The fix is not to complain about Reddit. It is to publish pages that answer the actual questions in your trade in quotable sentences: what a job costs in your area, how long it takes, what happens on the first visit, what the common failure modes are. Give a model something worth lifting and it will lift it.

How long does it take to start showing up in AI answers?

If the cause was technical, a blocked crawler or an unreadable site, you can see movement within days to a few weeks of the fix, because the barrier was mechanical and once it is gone the retrieval layer can find you.

If the cause was thin corroboration, expect months. New reviews have to accumulate, corrected listings have to be re-crawled, and new pages have to earn their place in the index before a model treats them as reliable. There is no way to compress that honestly, and any vendor who tells you otherwise is describing a schedule they cannot control.

We hold the work to a measurable outcome rather than to an AI mention count nobody can audit: top 3 in the Google Map Pack within 12 weeks or you do not pay. The entity, listing, review, and content work that gets a business there is the same work that makes it citable by an AI model, which is why we do not sell them as two separate programs.

How do I find out which of these is actually my problem?

Run the checks in this page yourself first. Read your robots.txt, load your site with JavaScript off, search your business name in three different phrasings inside ChatGPT, and look at which sources it cites for your competitors. Most owners find their answer in that hour.

If you would rather have it read for you, book a free 15-minute call. We will look at your site, your profile, and the actual answers being returned for your trade in your city, and tell you which of the six causes is yours. If it is a five-minute robots.txt fix, we will tell you that and you can go do it.

Worth knowing in advance: we take one client per trade per service area, so if a competitor in your market is already with us, we will say so on the call instead of running you through a pitch.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I check whether ChatGPT knows my business?

Ask it directly in several phrasings: your business name plus your city, then the generic question a customer would ask such as best roofer in your city, and note which businesses and which source links come back. Repeat it a few times, because the answers vary between runs.

Does blocking GPTBot stop me appearing in ChatGPT?

Blocking GPTBot removes your content from training use, and blocking OAI-SearchBot removes you from the search index ChatGPT retrieves from, which is the one that affects whether you get cited today. Local service businesses generally have no reason to block either.

Do I need to submit my business to ChatGPT somewhere?

No. There is no submission form, no listing, and no directory inside ChatGPT, so visibility comes entirely from what exists and can be verified out on the open web.

Why does ChatGPT recommend my competitor instead of me?

That is a comparison you are losing rather than an absence, and it means the model can verify your competitor from more independent sources than it can verify you. The fix is corroboration: consistent details, more independent confirmations, and pages that answer questions directly.

Does my business need to be old or well known to get cited?

No, but it does need to be confirmable, which is why a new business with a verified profile, consistent details, real reviews, and a readable site can get cited ahead of an older business that has let its information drift.

Will adding an llms.txt file get me into ChatGPT?

No. No major AI engine has confirmed that it uses llms.txt for retrieval or ranking, so it is a harmless file that will not solve an absence problem.

Does schema markup help me appear in AI answers?

It helps by removing ambiguity rather than by boosting you, because LocalBusiness schema states your hours, services, and service area in a form a machine cannot misread. It is a floor, not a lever.

Is this the same work as ranking in Google Maps?

Largely yes, which is the useful part: consistent business details, a complete profile, real reviews, and content that answers questions feed both the Map Pack and AI citation, so you are not funding two separate programs.
