GBP Video Verification: How to Pass on the First Try (2026 Guide)

A business owner filming their storefront for Google Business Profile video verification.

Google rolled out video verification in 2022 and expanded it through 2024 to cover most GBP verification scenarios. In 2026 it's the default verification path for most new profiles and for any existing profile Google flags for re-verification.

Most businesses fail on the first attempt because they don't know what Google's human review team is actually looking for. This guide walks through exactly that, shot by shot, plus the appeal protocol when verification fails.

What Video Verification Proves (In Google's Eyes)

Google's video verification team is trying to answer three questions:

  1. Is this a real business that exists in the physical world?
  2. Is the business at the exact address (or service area) claimed?
  3. Is the person filming authorized to manage this GBP?

Everything Google requires in the video maps back to one of those three questions. When you know what they're actually trying to prove, the script writes itself.

Pre-Shoot Setup (Before You Start Filming)

Equipment

  • Phone: Any smartphone with a good camera is fine. Don't use a drone, a DSLR, or a tripod, Google prefers handheld because it proves you're physically on-site.
  • Good lighting: Natural daylight is ideal. Avoid shooting at night, in dim rooms, or against strong backlight.
  • Clean audio: No background music, no narration from a third party, no voiceover added in post.

Account Setup Before Filming

  • Log in to the exact Google account that owns or manages the GBP
  • Navigate to the GBP listing
  • Click "Get verified" → choose "Video" (if video is offered)
  • Google will give you specific on-screen instructions, follow them exactly

What to Have Ready

  • Business license or registration document (for regulated industries)
  • Physical signage, wraps, or branded apparel that matches GBP name
  • Inventory, equipment, or tools of the trade visible at the location
  • Point-of-sale system or any digital system branded with the business name

The Shot-by-Shot Script That Passes

This is a single continuous video (do NOT stop and start recording). Total length: 60-90 seconds.

Shot 1: Approach (0:00 - 0:15)

Start from about 50 feet away from the business. Walk toward the front entrance while filming. Key elements to capture:

  • The surrounding environment (street, parking lot, adjacent businesses)
  • The building the business occupies
  • The primary exterior signage, visible and clear

This shot proves geographic location (Google can compare visual landmarks to Street View) and establishes that the business has a physical footprint.

Shot 2: Signage Confirmation (0:15 - 0:30)

Zoom in on the exterior signage. Hold the shot steady for 3-5 seconds. The business name on the sign must match the GBP name exactly. If the sign says "Joe's Auto" and the GBP says "Joe's Auto Repair LLC," that's a failure.

If you have a service-area business (no storefront), film:
- Your branded service vehicle (wrap, decal, or magnetic sign)
- The wrap/decal must show the exact business name as on the GBP

Shot 3: Entry (0:30 - 0:45)

Walk through the front door. Film:
- The entryway
- Any reception area, waiting room, or branded interior
- A point-of-sale system, branded coffee machine, or digital screen with the business name

This proves the business operates on the interior, not just on the signage.

Shot 4: Operations Evidence (0:45 - 1:00)

Show the actual business operating:

Vertical What to show
Restaurant Kitchen equipment, prep stations, branded menus
Retail Inventory on shelves, branded point-of-sale
Medical/professional Exam rooms, branded intake forms, diplomas
Auto services Service bays, tools, branded uniforms
Service-area business Branded vehicle interior, dispatch system, service equipment

This proves the business actually operates, not just exists.

Shot 5: Documentation (1:00 - 1:15)

Open and film:
- Your business license or registration (hold it steady for 3-5 seconds, well-lit, readable)
- Your utility bill (optional but helpful if you have it)

Must show:
- Business name exactly matching the GBP
- Business address exactly matching the GBP (or service area declaration)

Shot 6: Authorization (1:15 - 1:30)

Film yourself briefly (owner or authorized manager). You don't need to speak, but your face should be clear. Hold up:
- Your driver's license or government ID (keep ID number covered with thumb; Google just wants to see you're a real person associated with the business)

Or film:
- Your email signature screen on the phone showing the business domain
- A screen capture of your business bank login showing the business name
- Your desk with business-branded materials

End the Recording

Do NOT edit the video. Don't add music. Don't add text overlays. Don't zoom with digital zoom between shots (use your feet). Upload as-is.

Common Video Verification Failures (and Fixes)

Failure Likelihood Fix
Signage doesn't match GBP name exactly Very High Update GBP name to match sign OR install new signage
No interior footage High Re-film with interior walkthrough
Video has music/voiceover edited in High Re-film as continuous handheld
Camera cuts between shots High Re-film as single continuous take
Address not shown in document Medium Hold utility bill or license clearly showing address
Service-area business filmed at home address Medium Film in/around branded vehicle, show service equipment
Business license expired or missing Medium Get current license from your state before filming
Poor lighting (video too dark) Medium Re-film during daylight
Filming someone else's business Fatal Don't do this, causes hard suspension, not just verification failure

What Happens After You Submit

  • Day 0-3: Video arrives in Google's verification queue
  • Day 3-5: Human review (Google has an India-based + Philippines-based verification team)
  • Day 5-7: Result: verified, needs more info, or denied

Approval rate for well-shot videos following this guide: roughly 85-90% on first attempt in our experience.

If Approved

Your GBP goes live. Monitor for the first 30 days, new GBPs are watched closely.

If Denied

Wait 7 days. Re-film the video addressing whatever issue was cited in the denial email. Do NOT submit the same video again.

If Denied Multiple Times

After 3 denials, Google usually requires a postcard verification or an in-person visit from a Google operations rep. For service-area businesses without a physical storefront, this can be difficult. At that point, options are:

  1. Add a physical address where staff receives mail and file an SAB conversion
  2. Use a coworking space with permanent signage (at your own risk)
  3. Accept that the business will remain in a suspended/pending state until policy clarifies

Service-Area Business Special Case

The most common video verification failures are service-area businesses (mobile mechanics, plumbers, landscapers, etc.) because they don't have a traditional storefront. Specific guidance:

  • Never use a UPS box or PO box as the address. This causes both verification failure and eventual suspension.
  • Film in your garage, shop, or operations center, not at your home address.
  • Show branded vehicles, uniforms, tools, equipment, all matching the business name.
  • Film an invoice or service ticket (redact customer info) to prove real operations.
  • Set the GBP to "I deliver services to customers at their locations". This hides the address and makes verification easier.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does GBP video verification take?

Google typically processes video verification submissions within 5 business days. Most approvals come back in 48-72 hours when the video shows clear, continuous footage of the storefront, signage, business interior, and any equipment or proof of operation. Rejections usually trigger a re-submission window of 7 days.

What does a successful GBP verification video need to show?

Four elements: (1) Exterior signage with the exact business name displayed on the Google Business Profile, (2) Address visible on the building or mailbox, (3) Continuous footage walking into the business interior — no cuts or edits, (4) Business-specific equipment or activity proving the listed services are performed there. Total video length: 1-3 minutes, single uncut clip.

Can a service-area business pass video verification without a storefront?

Yes — Google accepts video verification for service-area businesses showing branded vehicles, business equipment, signage on a residential or commercial property used for operations, and the owner with valid ID. The video needs to demonstrate the business operates from the listed address and provides the listed services, even without a public storefront.

Why was my GBP video verification rejected?

The most common rejection reasons are: (1) Signage does not match the business name on file, (2) Video has cuts, edits, or jumps suggesting splicing, (3) Address shown does not match the GBP address, (4) The video does not show specific equipment or activity proving services are performed, (5) Audio is muted or unclear. Re-submit within 7 days addressing the specific reason Google cited.

Is video verification permanent or do I need to re-verify periodically?

Once verified, a GBP listing stays verified indefinitely unless Google flags it for re-verification — which can happen after major edits (name change, address change, category change), suspicious review patterns, or third-party suggested edits. Re-verification when triggered uses the same video standards as initial verification.
