Does ChatGPT Look at My Google Reviews When It Recommends a Local Business?
Reviews shape which local businesses AI assistants name, but they are not the whole story. Here is what recent testing shows, and how to check where you stand.
By Digital Domination Team

Reviews clearly matter, but ChatGPT doesn't simply copy Google's top three. AI assistants build local answers from what they can find about you online: your listings, your website and what customers say. Businesses with strong, current reviews and consistent details give an assistant more reasons to name them and fewer chances to get them wrong. Google itself says more reviews and positive ratings can help local ranking, and AI answers lean heavily on the same public signals.
Want to see what an assistant says about your market right now? Our free AI Overview and LLM SEO scan asks a real AI assistant who is best in your area, shows you who it named, and compares your review count with the businesses that come up for your main search.
Reviews are one part of our step-by-step plan for getting recommended by ChatGPT.
What does recent testing show about how ChatGPT picks local businesses?
A two-city test this month found that AI assistants mostly name real local businesses, but often not the same ones Google ranks in its top three. In an October 7, 2026 field test of 250 local recommendations, researcher Ryan Doser asked ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity "Who is the best [service] in [city]?" for six home services in Omaha and Boise. A few findings are useful for any local owner:
- ▸Most picks were real local businesses. 97.6% of the 250 recommendations were real businesses serving the metro area.
- ▸Google's top three was only part of the story. Just 22.8% of the recommendations were in Google's top three map results for the matching search. ChatGPT matched most often, at 31.0% of its picks.
- ▸The assistants rarely agreed. Across 12 questions, the four assistants never all listed the same business first.
- ▸Details went wrong more often than businesses did. In 7 of 250 recommendations, the phone number given didn't match the company's live Google listing. In a check run before the test, one ChatGPT answer showed a real company with a 1.0 star rating when its Google listing actually showed 4.3 stars.
The study's own conclusion is the practical one: the misses involved a listing, a website or a phone number, and if those agree, the assistant has less to get wrong. It is a two-city pilot, so treat it as a snapshot, not a law.
Why do reviews matter so much to AI assistants?
Reviews are public proof an assistant can read and compare, and the words in them describe what you actually do. When someone asks for the best plumber near me, an assistant needs evidence. Star ratings, review counts and what reviewers say are some of the easiest pieces of evidence to find. Google's guidance on improving your local ranking says prominence is based partly on how many reviews you have, and that more reviews and positive ratings can help.
- ▸Review text is specific. A review that says "they fixed our tankless water heater the same afternoon" tells search systems and assistants something about your services, speed and area. A pile of five-word "great service" reviews says much less.
- ▸Fresh reviews show you're open. One failure in the test above was a business that no longer had a current listing. Steady new reviews and replies make it obvious that you are open, busy and responsive.
How many Google reviews do I need to get recommended?
There's no magic number. What matters is how you compare with the businesses that already show up for your main search. Ten reviews might lead in a small town, while a busy metro category might need far more to stand out. The AI Overview and LLM SEO scan shows your review count next to the businesses that come up for your main search, so you know your real target instead of guessing.
Do I have to be in Google's top 3 for ChatGPT to mention me?
Not necessarily. In the October 2026 field test, only 22.8% of AI recommendations were in Google's top three for the matching search. Ranking well in Google Maps still helps, and it is still where most local searches happen, so it's worth working on both. Why does ChatGPT give me a different list every time I ask?
Because AI answers change from one question to the next, so a single answer is a sample, not a ranking. If you've asked ChatGPT about your industry twice and gotten two different lists, you're not imagining it. The test above found the assistants rarely agreed on a first pick, and reruns brought back only part of the original list. That's why our scan never gives you a position. It reports how many sampled answers named you, with the margin, instead of a ranking that changes when you refresh. We cover this in more depth in AI local recommendations are volatile.
Is it just reviews, or does ChatGPT look at other things too?
Reviews are one leg. Assistants also need to be able to read your site and find your facts. The free AI Overview and LLM SEO scan scores four things you can check the same way every time:
- ▸AI crawler access: whether AI search crawlers are allowed to read your site at all.
- ▸Review footing: your review count against the businesses that come up for your main search.
- ▸Readable facts: your address, phone, hours and services written as text. An assistant can't read a phone number inside an image.
- ▸Page structure: whether your page is laid out so facts can be pulled out cleanly.
A business with great reviews and a website that blocks AI crawlers, or hides its phone number in a graphic, is making the assistant's job harder than it needs to be. Our guide How Do I Know If My Website Is Blocking ChatGPT? walks through the crawler side.

How do I get more good reviews the right way?
Ask every happy customer, make it easy to be specific, reply to what comes in, and keep your details identical everywhere.
- Ask every time. Make asking part of your process, not a once-a-quarter push. A text with a direct review link right after the job is done works for most service businesses. Don't filter who you ask based on whether you think they'll be happy. Our article Is Review Gating Illegal, or Just Against Google's Policy? explains why.
- Make it easy to mention specifics. You can't script reviews, but "If you have a minute, mention what we fixed and what part of town you're in" is a fair request.
- Reply to reviews, good and bad. Google says replying shows customers you value their feedback. Replies also add more current, readable text about your business.
- Keep one set of details everywhere. Use one main phone number, one business name and one address on your Google Business Profile, your website, Facebook and every directory. The phone mismatches in the field test are exactly the kind of error consistent details prevent. See ChatGPT local SEO now depends on directory proof too.
- Check what the assistants actually say. Run the free AI Overview and LLM SEO scan to see who a real assistant names for your area, where your review count stands against theirs, and which sources the answer pulled from.
What should I do about unfair reviews while Google's appeals are delayed?
Flag reviews that break Google's policies, file one appeal, and reply calmly in public while you wait. On October 20, 2026, Search Engine Roundtable reported that Google review appeals are delayed again, with a Google team member asking owners not to file duplicate appeals. In the meantime, a calm, professional reply protects you more than silence. For the math on recovering from a bad one, see How Many 5-Star Reviews Does It Take to Cancel a 1-Star Review?, and if reviews vanish, read Why Did Google Delete My Reviews?.
What should I avoid?
- ▸Don't buy reviews or trade discounts for five stars. It breaks Google's rules and can cost you the reviews you earned honestly.
- ▸Don't panic over one AI answer. Look at several answers over time.
- ▸Don't let your profile go stale. Old hours, a disconnected number or a dead website link can end up in an AI answer long after you've fixed it somewhere else.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does ChatGPT read my Google reviews directly?
OpenAI doesn't publish a full list of where ChatGPT gets local business details. Testing shows assistants often repeat the ratings, review counts and contact details found in public listings, and those details are sometimes out of date. The safest plan is to keep your Google Business Profile and other listings accurate and active.
Will more reviews guarantee ChatGPT recommends me?
No. No one can promise an AI recommendation. Reviews help, and so do crawler access, readable facts and a well-structured website. Answers also vary from one question to the next.
How many Google reviews do I need for ChatGPT to recommend me?
There's no set number. What matters is how you compare with the businesses that show up for your main search, and the AI Overview and LLM SEO scan shows your count next to theirs.
Do I have to rank in Google's top 3 to show up in ChatGPT?
Not necessarily. In an October 2026 field test, only 22.8% of AI recommendations were in Google's top three for the matching search. Ranking well in Google Maps still helps.
Why does ChatGPT recommend different businesses every time I ask?
AI answers vary from one question to the next, and different assistants rarely agree on a first pick. Look at how often you're named across several answers instead of one result.
Do Yelp or Facebook reviews help with ChatGPT too?
They can. Assistants pull from a range of sources, and which directories matter depends on your industry. The AI Overview and LLM SEO scan reports which sources an answer cited so you can see what matters in your market.
